What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medical treatment, originating in China and has been used for over 3000 years. It is a technique where thin sterile needles are inserted into the body at specific points, also known as acupuncture points. It has recently gained popularity in North America and is used to help treat a variety of issues and conditions associated with pain or discomfort.

Does Acupuncture Work?

Yes, it works! For many individuals! Through research it has been shown that there is a connection between the acupuncture points of the body and the nervous system (nerves). These "Acu points" have a less intense electrical charge then other areas of the body and are used to help decrease the sensitivity of the nervous system. The patient will have a decreased sensitivity and thus a reduction in pain, trigger points in muscles and an increase in relaxation. It can help with a variety of ailments such as upper and lower, back pain, muscular tension, headaches, migraines, knee pain and dysfunction. In Chinese medicine, it is believed that the body has opposing forces Yin & Yang, which are the energy forces, known as Qi that flow throughout channels in the body known as Meridians. However, if the energy flow decreases or becomes blocked it will lead to pain, decrease in function and mobility. Acupuncture can help decrease and eliminate these blockages from the body by helping stimulate the body’s own healing response systems.
